P E N T O M I N O E S
The game of Pentominoes consists of 12 pieces, where each piece
consists of 5 squares (hence the name pento-mino). The pieces
are unique in shape and resemble letters of the alphabet so they
are named according to this scheme:
TTT U U V W X Y ZZ FF IIIII LLLL PP NN
T UUU V WW XXX YYYY Z FF L PP NNN
T VVV WW X ZZ F P
Together, all the pieces total 60 squares. The most amazing
thing about these pentominoes is that they can be fitted together
to form the following rectangles:
6 X 10, 5 X 12, 4 X 15 and even 3 X 20!
If you feel challenged, you may make pentominoes from cardboard
by carefully marking off reqularly spaced qrid lines and tracing
the various pieces, then cutting them. You might like to try
building just even one 6X10 rectangle!
Another popular shape that the pentominoes can fill is a an 8 X 8
square with a 2 X 2 hole in the middle. You can get several
symmetrical patterns from this board.
PEN2PLAY was written to let you play Pentominoes, making YOU put the
pieces on the board yourself. After you start PEN2PLAY, you are given
a selection of boards. Pick one of your choice.
The game starts with a blinking cell. This cell moves along the board
as you fill it with pieces. To release a piece into the board, press
the Gray Plus key. (To remove it, use the ESCape key). When a piece
has just been released into the board, it blinks. You may then fix
it where it is by hitting RETurn, or you may re-orient (flip, rotate,
etc.) the piece using the Up and Down arrows. The Left and Right
arrows at this time lets you change the piece currently being examined.
Of course, you may "pop" the pieces off the board by pressing ESCape.
The pieces will "pop" off in the reverse order that they were put in.
I also included a "GO" option which makes the computer GO from the
current board setup. It will keep going until it finds a solution or
you press any key (you may have to press several times).
When a solution is found, you may play again or print the solution.
In printing a solution you may List it (in compressed letter notation)
or Draw it (using line segments).
I hope you enjoy PEN2PLAY.

PS. If you have not downloaded it yet, there is also available, from this
or other bulletin boards, a PEN2MINO.ARC. This file contains the Solver
and Demo programs. Solver will try to solve ANY board that you supply.
It is also much faster than the GO option of PEN2PLAY. Demo is simply
a "show" that displays a collection of solved boards on the screen.
